Happy Easter!

Just had a bowl of the Irish lamb stew I fixed the night before. My kids can pick out the pearl onions.Nice rainy day here in Seattle.  For some reason, I feel more creative on days like today. I like to hole up at Cafe Fiore’ and write, then hole up in my studio drawing. From my studio I can see Elliott Bay and the many ships anchored in the harbor.  I was up at the cafe a little while ago putting the finishing touches on a week of Adam@Home strips that deal with accountants/taxes. Adam’s advice has always been to use an accountant who also works from home, for they know “business” deductions better than anyone. Gotta run. I can hear my editors in Kansas City grumbling for me to get these strips in by tomorrow (Monday).  More to come sooner than later!(Hopefully)Go CAPS!! BB

Adam at Home March 23 08: let’s go skating

Brian shares the passion of roller blading with his friend Vipin and his daughter Mia, but mainly Brian loves to Ice Skate and play hockey.  Sorry Basketball fans, Brian is more excited about Stanley Cup play offs coming soon, rather than bracketology:-), enjoy todays Adam At home:

Happy Thanksgiving

I’m thankful for many things — nothing more important than my wonderful children and supportive wife, my friends — old and new, good health, the bumps in the road I have been fortunate to gain experience from, the passion for my craft passed to me from my father, this amazing universe, and finally, the unfaltering loyalty from all the dogs in my life who live forever in my heart and memories. Enjoy the things you’re thankful for.

Has it been that long??!

OK, so I haven’t posted in weeks. I’ll be honest. I’m a lousy blogger. I love the idea of it, but I find myself spent at the end of the day from drawing. And If I do take a break during the day, it’s usually to walk the dog and grab some coffee up at Cafe Fiore here on Queen Anne. Speaking of the dog. Reeses is our 14+year-old mixed breed who looks mostly like a Golden Retriever. Last Saturday she came down with her second bout of “Old dog vertigo.” Her last affliction was seven months ago. “Old dog vertigo” is a temporary loss of balance that can last weeks. For the first couple of days I had to carry her outside for her to do her business, as negotiating stairs were too difficult. The vet has me giving her a quarter tablet of Dramamine which has helped tremendously. She and I even went on a mile and a half walk this morning. Here strides are somewhat drunkenly, but she’s showing far more progress in a shorter time than her first go’round. I always fear the worst when things like this happen. She’s a wonderful dog. Event though Rover is a compilation of all the dogs that have been in my life, Reeses was around during the development of Red and Rover, and as such, inspired numerous ideas and joyfully modeled for only three Milky Bones and a good scratch behind the ears. I will miss her terribly when she’s gone. She’s been a good friend.

How to attract more business, free lunch

I am adding my friend Brian’s cartoon Adam @ Home, without his permission. But, I really like this comic, and it’s so appropriate for my blog for the blogging coach on how to attract more business. If you can find a way to feed people you will gain more clients. Simple hunh:-)

The all-nighter

Pulled another one. I’m getting to be a real pro at these. It’s just after 6:00 and the week of work I finished looks OK — I hope. Nah, they do. I’ll run down to Kinkos in 45 minutes when they open, make some nice copies, run back here, scan and zap ‘em to my editors, Amy Lago and Kate Wills, at the Washington Post Writers Group. After that I’ll grab a couple hours of sleep before heading off to an 11:00 meeting. The city’s slowly waking up. A ship’s fog horn just broke the silence outside. Do I dare grab some coffee while I’m out and risk not being able to sleep, even for a short while? Ahhh, the glamour of it all! I would not trade it for anything.

Brain waves

Worked on some Sunday ideas at the cafe this morning. One I’ll take to paper either today or tomorrow. Two need massaging and flushing out. So I’m happy with the gist of those concepts but just not satisfied with them enough to strap myself behind my desk for the next five or six hours. It’s really important for me to scrutinize every aspect of the cartoon — the humor, design and artwork, as well as how different age groups will interprept the completed strip. This is not to say I don’t fall flat on my face. There’s not one strip, both Sunday and daily, that I haven’t found some flaw (s) with when I finally see it in print. This is definitely more true with Red and Rover over Adam@Home, mainly because Red and Rover is so close to my heart. I even spend two to three times longer on R&R. That alone might tell volumes. Time to put on my reading glasses and sharpen up the pencils for the one strip that passed muster. although I’m sure to grimace when I see it in the newspaper five weeks from now.

Art imitates life

So I’m hanging out at Caffee Fiore this morning trying to come up with a week of ideas for Adam@Home when the ADD in me shifts gears and reminds me that I haven’t posted on my blog in donkey weeks. Just like that, my brain downshifts again to alert me to the fact that I only have six hours before my work needs to be filed to my editor at Universal Press Syndicate in Kansas City. Bingo!.. I’ll write a week of blogging strips!,which is exactly what
